The equity markets end the highly volatile session on a lower note on Friday. The Nifty 50 closed the counter 95 points, or 40%, lower at 23,431.50, breaching its important support level of 23,500. The Sensex dropped 241.30 points, or 31%, finishing the day at 77,378.91. The Nifty 50 shed 2.5% this week while the Sensex dipped 2.2%.
The Bank Nifty remained under pressure throughout the session, closing the day 1.5% lower at 48,734.15. The Nifty Midcap 100 ended the day 2.08% lower at 54,585.75. Out of 2,909 traded stocks on NSE, 551 stocks advanced and almost 2,290 stocks declined.
“Domestic market sentiment remained subdued due to rising crude oil prices, driven by supply concerns, and a strengthening dollar index. Despite the IT sector’s resilience following positive early Q3 results, broader indices bled due to uncertainties surrounding Trump policies and high valuations,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.

Bucking the trend IT stocks commanded the top position in Friday’s trade on the Nifty 50 post TCS’ quarterly earnings. TCS was the top gainer on the Nifty 50, rose 5.6%. Followed by Tech Mahindra (3.59%), HCL Technologies (3.22%), Infosys (2.5%), and Wipro (2.5%).
The IT index was the only sectoral index to close in the green, ending 3.4% higher at 44,609.50.

Nureca closed the day 16.5% higher to close the session at Rs 376.95 then Maza 12.8% higher at Rs 1,952. It was followed by Cubex Tubings, an SME company with a total market cap of Rs 136 crore, surging more than 11.5%. Other stocks in the list included Atlas Cycles (10%), Diligent Media Corp. (9.9%), Ramkrishna Forgings (6%), and so on.

TCS topped the chart with 5.67% gains, after that Tech Mahindra (3.63%). HCL Technologies (3.13%), Infosys (2.55%), and Bajaj Finserv (0.55%) were the other three stocks among the top five gainers in Sensex on January 10.
Top 5 gainers in Nifty Midcap 50
Sundaram Finance closed the counter 3.13% higher in a weak market. Followed by Persistent Systems (1.97%), Mphasis (1.5%), Tata Communications (1.01%), and Marico (1%).
