Former HUL Chairman Susim Dutta passes away in Mumbai

Former chairman of Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (HUL), Susim Dutta has passed away in Mumbai, today. Susim Mukul Datta’s career began with Hindustan Lever in the 1950s. For over four decades, he advanced through the company’s rungs and took the helm as Chairman from 1990 to 1996.

A prominent business leader and rural marketing revolutionary, Dutta has held leadership roles in over 21 companies. During his time at HUL, he was also the As the Non-Executive Chairman of several organisations. The illustrious list includes IL&FS Investment Managers Ltd., Tata Trustee Co. Pvt Ltd., Philips India Ltd., and Castrol India Ltd. His notable career milestones also echoed in Peerless General Finance & Investment Co. Ltd. and Linde India Ltd.

At Hindustan Unilever, Datta transformed the FMCG sector, spearheaded major mergers and acquisitions. The landmark Brooke Bond–Lipton tea deal—and which solidified HUL’s dominance in the Indian FMCG sector, was overseen by Susim Dutta himself.
