Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn has expanded its investment in India amid shifting global trade dynamics, acquiring machinery worth Rs 276 crore ($32.25 million) to enhance its production capacity. The move aims to boost iPhone manufacturing in India, according to sources. This development comes just a day before US President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on multiple countries, including India, set to take effect from April 2.

Foxconn is reportedly working towards doubling iPhone production in India as part of Apple’s efforts to shift more manufacturing outside China. However, neither Foxconn nor Apple has commented on the latest investment.
Industry push for zero import duty on US phones
The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) has proposed reducing the 15 per cent import duty on mobile phones from the US to zero. The association argues that the US is not a direct competitor to India in electronics manufacturing but presents a $80 billion mobile phone export opportunity for India.

In addition to iPhones, Foxconn is set to begin manufacturing Apple AirPods in Hyderabad this month. AirPods will be the second Apple product category produced in India, reinforcing the country’s position as a key manufacturing hub for the tech giant.
