Will NSE, BSE be open or closed today, March 31? Check upcoming market holidays in April

The share markets remain closed today on account of Eid-ul-Fitr. There will be no trading in other segments, including the equity derivatives as well as the securities lending and borrowing (SLB) today.

It’s an extended weekend for market participants as the exchanges are shuttering Eid-ul-Fitr, a key Islamic festival. The commodity and rupee trade will also be suspended today. However, banks are open selectively to facilitate end-of-the-year income tax transactions by the Government.

As the market steps into a new month and new financial year on April 1, here is a list of holidays one needs to keep in mind in the next few months. The markets are shut on April 10 for Mahavir Jayanti, April 14 for Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti, and they are also shut on April 18 the same week for Good Friday.

That apart markets will be shit on May 1 for Maharashtra Day and in August there are quite a few market holidays on account of Independence Day on August 15 and Ganesh Chaturthi on August 27.

Trade timings on NSE, BSE

A quick look at the regular trade timings for the market otherwise. The markets are open Monday to Friday, barring holidays between 9:15 am to 3:30 pm. They do not trade on Saturdays or Sundays apart from emergency or special trading sessions.

On special days, like when the Budget was announced on February 1, 2025 (a Saturday), the markets also traded in a special session, Similarly, sometimes the exchanges undertake special sessions for a few hours over the weekend to test the system. However, these are always informed in advance.

Just like the stock market, the commodity exchange, MCX also trades between Monday to Friday. The timings are from 9 am to 5 pm. The evening session on MCX starts at 5 pm and continues till 11:30 pm in summer and 11:55 pm during other months. Agricultural products with international links trade between 5 pm to 9:30 pm on MCX.
