Retail inflows into equities touch three-year high

Net inflows of Rs 1.25 lakh crore from retail investors into equities touched a three-fiscal high in FY25 while infusions from domestic institutional investors crossed Rs 6 lakh crore, the highest in a decade, data from the National Stock Exchange (NSE) show.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) withdrew Rs 1.27 lakh crore from Indian stocks, the most since FY22, when this category had seen outflows of Rs 1.4 lakh crore.

For the fiscal that ended on March 31, the major indices of the NSE delivered returns in the range of 4%-5.5%, with the Nifty Midcap 150 outperforming with a 7.6% return.

Data also reveal that during FY25, market capitalisation of 2,720 companies listed on the NSE rose to Rs 410.87 lakh crore, from Rs 384.2 lakh crore in the previous financial year. Of this, 610 companies on its SME platform, NSE Emerge, had market capitalisation of Rs 1.8 lakh crore, against Rs 1.2 lakh crore in FY24. The market cap-to-GDP ratio fell by 4 percentage points to 124%.

A total of 20.9 million new investors were added in the year, taking the unique registered investors to 113 million with total unique accounts at 219.4 million. While Maharashtra remained the top state in terms of investor base with 18.4 million investors, Uttar Pradesh saw the most number of new investor registrations at 2.95 million.

In the cash market, NSE’s total turnover stood at Rs 281.27 lakh crore, up 39.9% from last year; premium turnover of equity options rose 2.3% to Rs 155.50 lakh crore; and that from equity futures was up 40.4% to Rs 462.89 lakh crore.

Total notional turnover of NSE IX, the exchange’s multi-asset platform for global investment set up at GIFT City, crossed the $1-trillion mark in FY25, compared with $735 billion last year, with 65,031 unique clients being registered.

The total collateral at NSE Clearing has increased to more than Rs 7 lakh crore as on March 27, 2025, from around Rs 6 lakh crore on the same day last year.
