Vikas Kaushal appointed as HPCL CMD

The government on Friday named private sector consultant Vikas Kaushal the chairman and managing director of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) for a period of five years, according to an official order.

He succeeds Rajneesh Narang, director (finance), who was handling the additional charge of CMD since September 1, 2024.

Kaushal is a seasoned global leader with over three decades of experience in energy, oil and gas, and power sectors. Twice elected to Kearney’s global board of directors, he completed two full terms at the firm. Kaushal was the only Indian to be considered competent for Kearney’s global board selection. He has also served as the MD and country head for Kearney India for five years. 

Kaushal is a chemical engineering graduate from Panjab University and has done his MBA from Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad. He has also served as an adviser and consultant to the leadership of global and Indian oil and gas companies, including HPCL, IndianOil, BPCL, GAIL, and others for a long period of time.

At IOC, Kaushal led a five-year digital transformation programme, making the company a consistent award winner for best digital oil company and spearheaded multiple strategy projects on petchem, gas, and related domains. He also led a refinery maintenance transformation programme for IOC and spearheaded its Dhruva retail transformation and cost transformation of lubes business.

At HPCL, Kaushal also established the centralised procurement office, driving efficiency and savings and led the firm’s petrochemical diversification strategy. He also led the net zero planning and petchem strategy for BPCL.

Additionally, he has led corporate plan implementation for NTPC and implemented reliability-centred maintenance for Tata Power.

In the renewable energy sector, he designed and executed commercial & industry power sales business for global renewable energy company in India. The project resulted in a 2 GW+ business expansion.
