Ambani scions chose their own roles in Reliance Industries based on their passions, says Nita Ambani

While Mukesh Ambani had, in August 2022, announced his succession plan for critical business segments under Reliance Industries, his wife Nita Ambani, in a recent exclusive interview with Bloomberg Television, said that their three children – Akash, Isha and Anant Ambani – played a key role in the succession planning. She said that the Ambani scions chose which divisions of Reliance Industries they wanted to lead based on their own personal interests. “All of them are so passionate about what they do. And I sometimes just have to watch them fly to their own dreams,” she said.

While Akash Ambani is leading the telecom business, heading Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, Isha Ambani is the Director of Reliance Retail Ltd and Anant Ambani is leading the Group’s green energy projects and runs the rescue and the rehabilitation Center for Animals in Jamnagar in Gujarat, Nita Ambani said.

During the annual shareholders’ meeting of Reliance Industries in August 2022, Mukesh Ambani had laid bare the succession plan of India’s largest company by market value, identifying twins Akash and Isha for telecom and retail leadership, and youngest son Anant for the new energy unit. He had, however, insisted he wasn’t retiring yet and would “continue to provide hands-on leadership as before”.

Reliance has three broad businesses — oil refining and petrochemicals, retail, and digital services that include telecom. Retail and digital services are housed in separate wholly-owned subsidiaries – Jio Platforms and Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd (RRVL).

Reliance Industries has had its share of bitter feud between Mukesh Ambani and his younger brother Anil Ambani due to absence of any succession announcement. The brothers were involved in a battle for the control of the Group after their father died in 2002 without a will.

Reliance Industries X Walt Disney

Reliance Industries and Walt Disney formed a joint venture in November 2024, worth $8.5 billion and Nita Ambani is the chairperson of the JV. The joint venture, per the Bloomberg report, will combine their respective digital-streaming and television assets in India. The deal, Bloomberg stated, will create one of the leading TV and digital-streaming platforms in India,
