Makar Sankranti is a festival celebrated across India with different names such as Lohri, Pongal and so on. However, for traders and investors, the main question ahead of this celebration is whether the stock markets will remain open or closed for this occasion.
As per the BSE and NSE list of holiday calendar 2025, the Indian stock markets will remain open for trading on January 14. Meanwhile, the RBI has declared a bank holiday on the same day.
Why stock markets remain open on Makar Sankranti
Although Makar Sankranti is a public holiday in several states and observed by banks, the Indian stock exchanges’ operations follow a different schedule.
The Indian headline indices, BSE and NSE do not align with every public holiday or regional festival. This year, Makar Sankranti falls outside the official list of market holidays announced for 2025, allowing markets to function as usual.
This means that on January 14, trading in equity, derivatives, commodities, bonds, and currencies will proceed during regular hours. As per the regular schedule, the Indian bourses will open at 9:15 AM and close at 3:30 PM, maintaining the standard trading sessions.
