Watch video | ‘Love staring at my wife…’: Anand Mahindra weighs in on 90-hour workweek debate

In a world where hustle culture often dominates, Mahindra Group Chairperson Anand Mahindra’s perspective stands out as a refreshing counterpoint. Reacting to L&T Chairman SN Subrahmanyan’s recent suggestion that employees should work 90 hours a week and even on Sundays to stay competitive, Mahindra offered a measured and thoughtful response.

“I don’t want it to be about the time. I don’t want it to be about quantity. Ask me what’s the quality of my work. Don’t ask me how many hours I work,” Mahindra remarked when asked about his own work habits. “If you are not spending time at home or with friends and if you are not reading and don’t have time to reflect, how will you bring the inputs into making the right decisions?”

Known for his engaging presence on X, Mahindra also shed light on how he views social media as a tool for business, not escapism. “I am on X not because I’m lonely. My wife is wonderful—I love staring at her,” he quipped. “People don’t realise it’s an amazing business tool,” Mahindra added.

Subrahmanyan’s remarks sparked widespread criticism, with Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone and RPG Group Chairperson Harsh Goenka among those expressing their disapproval.

In response to the backlash, L&T clarified that Subrahmanyan’s comments were meant to encourage extraordinary efforts toward nation-building rather than establish a rigid benchmark.

For Anand Mahindra, however, the focus remains on positivity and inspiration. Reflecting on a recent interaction with young minds, he shared, “My batteries are fully charged after today’s event,” commending the enthusiasm and innovative ideas showcased during the dialogue.
