Tata Consulting Engineers acquires US-based CDI engineering solutions to expand in North America

Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE), a company specializing in design, engineering, and project management, has bought CDI Engineering Solutions, a US-based firm previously known as Comprehensive Designers Inc. TCE, which is fully owned by Tata Sons and part of the Tata Group, aims to use this acquisition to expand into the North American market. The financial details of the deal have not been shared.

History and expertise of CDI

CDI, founded in 1950 and based in Houston, employs over 600 people. By acquiring CDI, TCE plans to offer better solutions for global challenges like clean energy, decarbonisation and resilient infrastructure.

The deal also gives TCE access to eight engineering centers in the US and strengthens its capabilities with CDI’s expertise and relationships with Fortune 500 clients.

TCE described the acquisition as a planned move to grow globally and enhance its skills. According to TCE, CDI’s expertise and strong client base, including top companies, align well with TCE’s strengths in engineering and project management.

Amit Sharma, TCE’s Managing Director and CEO, said the combined company will deliver great value to clients while tackling global issues such as sustainable infrastructure and energy transition. Steve Karlovic, President of CDI, emphasised their shared commitment to excellence and sustainability, noting that the deal will create new opportunities for employees.

TCE, originally founded as Tata Ebasco in 1962 through a partnership between Tata Group and US-based Ebasco Services, became a fully Tata-owned company in 1968. In 2024, TCE earned Rs 1,406 crore (about $170 million) in revenue, with 60% coming from India and 35% from government clients. The company employs over 6,000 people.
