9-Year Winning Streak for markets; Sensex, Nifty Up 8% each in 2024, midcaps clock

2024 has been about IPOs but for the stock markets did have their share of glory too. From new highs to record inflows, you saw it all in 2024. The major stock indices – the Sensex and Nifty 50 – rose by around 8 per cent over the past year, marking their ninth consecutive year of gains. The Nifty hit an all-time high of 26,277.35 while the Sensex scaled past 85,978.35. FII flows totalled Rs 7,747 crore and DIIs provided steady support.

On the final trading day of the year, both benchmark indices ended in the flat no. The BSE Sensex settled at 78,139.01, down by 109.12 points or 0.14 per cent, while the NSE Nifty 50 closed at 23,644.80, losing 0.1 points 0r 0.00042 per cent . The Nifty Bank, a critical barometer for financial stocks, wrapped up at 50,860.20, shedding 92.55 points 0r 0.18 per cent.

Market Performance in 2024

The year 2024 was a mixed bag for the markets. The Sensex recorded a gain of 8.12 per cent year-to-date, while the Nifty 50 appreciated by 8.75 per cent.

Both indices touched their all-time highs in September 2024, with the Sensex reaching 85,978.35 points and the Nifty hitting 26,277.35.

For the year, the Sensex gained 8.12 per cent, climbing 5,867.07 points to close at 78,139.01, while the Nifty rose 8.75 per cent, adding 1,902.90 points to finish at 23,644.80.

The six-month period saw the Sensex drop by 1.68 per cent, losing 1,337.18 points, and the Nifty decline by 2.06 per cent, shedding 497.15 points.

Despite the corrections in large-cap indices, the mid-cap and small-cap segments had a stellar year. The BSE Midcap surged by 25.62 per cent to end at 46,444.66 and the Nifty Midcap 50 advancing by 21.01 per cent to close at 15,974.10.
