Biryani reigns, pizza fades: What 2024 food trends from Zomato, Swiggy revealed?

Zomato’s much-anticipated year-end report for 2024 reveals fascinating shifts in India’s food preferences. While biryani continues its dominance, the trends suggest evolving appetites across the country. The year’s data highlights a shift towards homegrown favorites like dosa, alongside the steadfast love for biryani. While pizza’s dip hints at changing preferences, the food delivery scene remains vibrant, catering to both traditional and experimental tastes.

As 2024 comes to a close, here’s a look at some interesting food trends from the latest Zomato, Swiggy reports:

Biryani’s reign, but a dip in orders

For the eighth consecutive year, biryani remained the nation’s favorite, with over 9.1 crore orders on Zomato. Yet, this figure marked a noticeable decline from the previous year’s 10.09 crore orders, dropping nearly 95 lakh orders. Despite the dip, biryani’s popularity was unparalleled, with more than three orders per second on Zomato, compared to two per second on rival platform Swiggy.

Pizza loses its slice

Pizza, once a consistent favorite, experienced a significant drop in popularity. Orders fell by over 20%, from 7.45 crore in 2023 to 5.84 crore in 2024. This decline signals a shift towards other comfort foods and traditional options.

Dosa’s surprise climb

Swiggy’s 2024 findings highlighted dosa as the surprise contender, securing the second spot with 2.3 crore orders. This trend reflects an increasing inclination towards traditional South Indian staples, adding diversity to India’s food scene.

Zomato’s report also included memorable anecdotes. One customer fed an entire train bogey with 120 manchurian combos, while another in Bengaluru splurged over Rs 5 lakh on a single dining experience. These instances underscore the diversity and passion of India’s foodies.
