Wistron approves $20 million initial investment for a new factory line in Karnataka

Apple iPhone supplier Wistron has approved an initial investment of $20 million in one of its subsidiaries to construct a new factory line in Karnataka, laying the foundation to support its upcoming laptop manufacturing plant in India.

The company’s latest regulatory filings, accessed by FE, shows that Wistron’s board has approved a $20 million investment in ICT Service Management Solutions (India) through SMS InfoComm (Singapore), both fully-owned subsidiaries of Wistron. The board had previously approved a total investment of $40 million for setting up the after-sales service production line.

According to industry experts, ICT’s new production facility will be to provide warranty repair services, inventory management, and logistics solutions for Wistron’s laptop manufacturing operations. They added that ICT specialises in parts procurement and may help Wistron source parts for laptop manufacturing from both domestic and global suppliers. According to its website, ICT Service Management Solutions specialises in printed circuit board L3 repairs for notebooks and personal computers.

In January, Wistron signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Karnataka government to establish a laptop manufacturing plant in the state. The company has committed to investing ₹1,500 crore in the facility with plans to export over 50% of the production. Earlier, it was reported that the construction was slated to begin in July, with laptop production targeted to commence by January 2026.  

Recently, Wistron acquired a 32-acre land parcel in the Hi-Tech Defence & Aerospace Park in Karnataka’s Devanahalli district for ₹160 crore. The new after-sales service production line is expected to be located near the laptop manufacturing facility.

In October 2023, the Tata Group announced its 100% acquisition of Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India)’s plant in Karnataka from SMS InfoComm (Singapore) and Wistron Hong Kong Limited for $131 million (over ₹1,000 crore).
