The stock market closed on a downbeat note on Wednesday (December 18), as both the headline indices, Sensex and Nifty saw notable declines. The benchmark Sensex settled at 80,182.20, marking a loss of 0.62 per cent, while the NSE Nifty ended at 24,208.30, down by 0.52 per cent.

In a similar trend, the Nifty Bank index saw a sharper decline, closing at 52,099.25, down by 1.39 per cent.

BSE Sensex 30

Gainers

Among the gainers in the BSE Sensex 30 pack, TCS stood out, gaining 0.71 per cent to close at Rs 4,355.00. Reliance Industries followed closely, rising 0.67 per cent to Rs 1,253.50. Sun Pharma also saw a positive session, climbing 0.63 per cent to Rs 1,800.75. Other notable gainers included Tech Mahindra(0.50 per cent), M&M (0.39 per cent), and ITC (0.35 per cent), reflecting steady performance in their respective sectors. HCL Technologies and Infosys both ended by 0.34 per cent and 0.16 per cent gain, respectively.

Losers

On the downside, Bajaj Finance emerged as the top loser, slipping 1.16 per cent. L&T and ICICI Bank followed, declining by 1.19 per cent and 1.35 per cent. JSW Steel also faced a tough day, dropping 1.61 per cent. Adani Ports witnessed a 1.66 per cent drop, while NTPC and PowerGrid lost 1.85 per cent and 2.42 per cent, respectively. Nifty 50

Gainers

In today’s Nifty 50, Trent led the pack with a notable gain of 2.23 per cent. Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories followed closely, gaining 2.19 per cent. Cipla also saw a healthy increase, rising 1.46 per cent. Wipro shares climbed 1.28 per cent. In the top 5 stocks list, Bajaj Auto rounded off the top gainers, rising 0.82 per cent.

Losers

Among the laggards in the Nifty 50, Tata Motors was the top loser, falling 3.01 per cent. Bharat Electronics (BEL) also faced a significant decline, dropping 2.64 per cent. PowerGrid slipped 2.61 per cent. JSW Steel followed with a 2.46 per cent loss and NTPC ended the day down by 2.44 per cent among the top 5 losers.
