Maharashtra Elections 2024: In a relief to farmers, Centre eases soybean procurement norms raising moisture limit to 15%

Maharashtra Elections 2024: In a bid to woo angered farmers just days ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly polls, the Central government has allowed soybean procurement with a moisture content of up to 15% under the Price Support Scheme (PSS), up from the standard 12%.

The decision comes amid growing anger among farmers in Vidarbha and Marathwada over low market prices and sluggish government procurement.

According to The Indian Express report, an office order issued by Binod Giri, deputy commissioner (MPS), on Friday evening stated that while the relaxation is a one-time measure for the Kharif 2024-25 season, state governments will bear the expenses and losses associated with the procurement of soybean exceeding the usual moisture limit.

Despite Maharashtra having the largest number of procurement agencies in the country, the process remains slow. Of the 13.08 lakh tonnes targeted, only 3,887.93 tonnes have been procured so far. Farmers blame inadequate infrastructure and bandwidth at procurement agencies for the delays, while agencies cite the higher moisture content in soybeans as the main obstacle.

Soybean is a critical cash crop in poll-bound Maharashtra, cultivated over 50 lakh hectares. However, farmers are receiving far below the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 4,892 per quintal, with prices at Latur’s market—a key hub—hovering around Rs 4,100- Rs 4,200 per quintal.

Political leaders have weighed in, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi promising monetary aid to soybean farmers during a rally in Vidarbha. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi countered by pledging an MSP of Rs 7,000 per quintal, along with a bonus, should the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) form the next government.
