Royal Enfield Himalayan Electric 2.0: Will it become a reality?

Royal Enfield gained huge traction when it announced that it is stepping into the world of electric two-wheelers and launching its separate EV subsidiary brand called Flying Flea. The first model under the Flying Flea range will be the C6 which is most likely an equivalent of the Classic, hence the retro-inspired design.

The second bike in this range will be a scrambler named Flying Flea S6 which was also teased at the ongoing edition of EICMA. Besides these two models which will make it to production in the future, Royal Enfield also displayed a prototype of the all-electric Himalayan. Called the Himalayan Electric 2.0, the bike made a brief appearance at the podium in EICMA.

Royal Enfield Himalayan electric details

However, unlike the other two models— C6 and S6, the Himalayan electric doesn’t have a specific launch timeline. In fact, Siddharth Lal, Managing director of Royal Enfield, went ahead and disclosed that Enfield has no plans of launching a fully-electric Himalayan anytime soon. He revealed that the bike is currently being used as a testbed for all upcoming technologies in the EV space.

Initially called the ‘Him E’, Royal Enfield also played a short video of the Electric Himalayan 2.0 prototype being tested in the Himalayas. The video reveals that the battery-powered Himalayan prototype underwent rigorous challenges which are expected to be overhauled by an adventure bike which dons the Himalayan branding.

The test bike is fitted with gold-coloured wire-spoke wheels, a heavy-duty swingarm, and disc brakes at both the front and rear. The rider’s position is tall and upright, a hallmark of adventure touring motorcycles. In addition, it gets a tall windscreen up front, a round LED headlamp, new UI for the instrument console and an electronic suspension.

What we know is that the current prototype of the battery-powered Himalayan will not make it to production. Royal Enfield will develop at least two more prototypes of this machine before hitting the production line.
