After 90-hour work week backlash, L&T’s Subrahmanyan announces 1-day menstrual leave for woman employees

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Chairman SN Subrahmanyan on Thursday announced a one-day menstrual leave for women employees of the parent company during the Women’s Day celebrations. This initiative is expected to benefit approximately 5,000 women employees. 

“In the women’s day celebration at L&T today, SN Subrahmanyan announced 1 day menstrual leave for women employees of parent company L&T. This is a huge progressive step and an industry first. It is estimated that this will benefit approximately 5000 women employees,” states a company spokesperson.

Backlash over 90-hour workweek comments
The announcement comes just weeks after Subrahmanyan faced severe backlash for advocating extended work hours. In January, he suggested employees should work even on Sundays and expressed disappointment over the inability to implement a seven-day workweek at L&T.

His remarks, including a controversial comment about men staying at home, drew widespread criticism from employees and industry experts alike. He jokingly quipped, “What do you do sitting at home? How long can you stare at your wife?”
