Niva Bupa Health Insurance probing potential data leak after anonymous threat

India’s Niva Bupa Health Insurance Co is investigating a potential data breach after an anonymous source claimed to have access to customer data, the company said on Friday.

In a statement, the insurer confirmed that a “threat actor” sent an email alleging possession of sensitive customer data. “As a matter of urgency, we continue to conduct investigations of the data leak and implement measures to mitigate the risk,” the company said, without providing further details.

Growing Cybersecurity Concerns in Insurance

If confirmed, this would be the latest in a series of data breaches plaguing India’s insurance sector in recent months.

  • In November 2024, HDFC Life Insurance reported that an unidentified source had accessed and shared certain customer data with the company, allegedly with “mala fide intent.”
  • In August 2024, Star Health faced a major data theft incident where stolen customer details, including medical records, were being shared on Telegram and various websites.

Amid rising cyber threats, India’s Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) had directed insurers in October 2024 to conduct IT audits and bolster cybersecurity measures.

As concerns mount over data privacy and security in the financial sector, Niva Bupa’s ongoing probe will be closely watched, with potential regulatory scrutiny on the horizon.
