Jharkhand Elections 2024: JMM names 35 candidates in first list, CM Hemant Soren to contest on Barhait seat

Days after BJP and Congress’ lists were announced for the upcoming Jharkhand elections, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) released its first list of 35 candidates on Wednesday, fielding Chief Minister Hemant Soren from Barhait and Kalpana Soren from the Gandey segments.

The 81-member Jharkhand Assembly will vote in two phases — on November 13 and 20 — while the results will be declared on November 23.

Hemant Soren is the sitting MLA from the Barhait (ST) constituency in Sahibganj district. In the 2019 assembly elections, he won the seat by a significant margin of 25,740 votes against his nearest BJP rival, Simon Malto.

Among the 35 nominees announced by the JMM, Basant Soren, the incumbent chief minister’s brother, will contest from Dumka. Assembly Speaker Rabindranath Mahto is set to run from Nala, while Minister Mithilesh Thakur will contest from Garhwa. Other candidates include Sonu Sudivya from Giridih and Bebi Devi from Dumri.

Basant previously defeated former BJP minister Lois Marandi by over 6,842 votes in the party stronghold of Dumka, a constituency that became vacant when his elder brother, Hemant Soren, won both Dumka and Barhait in December 2019 and chose to retain the latter. Assembly Speaker Mahto also has a strong track record, having won Nala in Jamtara by a margin of 3,520 votes against Satyanand Jha of the BJP in the last elections. He has secured this seat in both 2005 and 2014 as well.

The JMM’s candidate list also features Dipak Birua from Chaibasa and Kedar Hazara, a three-term sitting MLA from the BJP who recently joined the JMM, from Jamua.
