How markets will open? Here are top 6 cues to watch ahead of trading on January 13

GIFT Nifty indicated that Indian equity indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 might see a muted start on Monday following Asian markets opening on a lower note in early trade hours. 

Previously, on Friday, the NSE Nifty 50 closed the session 95 points or 0.40% lower at 23,431.50, while the BSE Sensex closed 241 points or 0.31% lower at 77,378.91.

Key global cues to know on January 13, 2024 Asian markets

Asia markets were trading on a lower note on Monday after the US jobs report dented the hopes of early interest rate cuts by the US Fed. Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed on the back of the holiday. South Korea’s Kospi slipped 0.86% to trade at 2,493. The Asia Dow was trading 1.15% lower at 3,676.11.

US indices closed Friday on a lower note after the jobs report came hotter than expected, which dampened Wall Street’s expectations for early interest rate cuts. The S&P 500 closed the session 1.54% lower at 5,827. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite dipped 1.63% to close the session at 19,161.63. The 30-stock Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 696.75 points or 1.63% to close at 41,938.45.

US dollar 

The US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the dollar’s value against a basket of six foreign currencies, was down 0.03% at 109.66 on Monday morning. The index measures the US dollar’s strength or weakness against major currencies. The basket contains currencies such as the British Pound, Euro, Swedish Krona, Japanese Yen, Swiss Franc, etc. Also, the Indian rupee closed to a new all-time low of 85.96 against the US Dollar on Friday.

Crude oil

WTI crude prices were trading at $77.97 up by 1.83%, while Brent crude prices were trading at $81.15 up by 1.74%, on Monday morning. 

FII, DII data

Foreign institutional investors (FII) were the net sellers of shares net worth Rs 2,254.68 crore. Meanwhile, the Domestic institutional investors (DII) were the net buyers of shares worth Rs 3,961.92 crore on January 10, 2024, according to the provisional data available on the NSE.
