‘Resentment among central govt employees’ for not setting up 8th Pay Commission: Lawmakers push FinMin for clarity on timeline

8th Pay Commission News: It has been more than nine years since the implementation of the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission, and over one crore central government employees and pensioners are eagerly awaiting an announcement regarding the constitution of the next pay commission, whose recommendations will determine the revision of salaries and pensions for central staff.

Amidst employees and pensioners’ high expectations for the formation of the 8th Pay Commission, the Finance Minister has clarified the government’s position in the Lok Sabha while responding to queries from some parliamentarians.

Members of Parliament, including Jai Prakash, Anand Bhadauria, and V. Vaithilingam, raised questions about the reasons for the delay in constituting the 8th CPC. They also highlighted “resentment among central government employees” due to rising prices and stagnant pay structures.

They asked whether the government is considering the formation of the 8th CPC and, if so, the timeline for its announcement.

Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary stated that the 7th CPC was constituted on February 28, 2014. “No such proposal is under consideration with the government for constitution of 8th Central Pay Commission for the central government employees, at present,” he said, adding that as there is no proposal, the question of a timeline does not arise.

When was the 7th Pay Commission set up?

Central government employees have been waiting for the constitution of the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC), especially as more than a decade has passed since the 7th CPC was set up in 2014. Many employees and lawmakers have expressed concern over rising inflation and its impact on living costs.

Central government employees argue that the absence of a new pay commission has left them grappling with rising inflation and increased living costs. The delay has reportedly led to widespread dissatisfaction among employees across various departments, including the armed forces.

What’s next for central govt employees and pensioners?

For now, the government has ruled out any immediate plans for the setting up of the 8th Central Pay Commission.
