Volkswagen ID.2-based electric SUV teased ahead of global debut

Volkswagen is going ahead with its expansive electric vehicle (EV) plans despite the EV industry witnessing a global slowdown, especially in Europe. The German carmaker has now teased a new subcompact electric SUV based on the ID.2 all concept which broke covers in 2022.

The ID.2 All concept lays the foundation for all entry-level EVs from Volkswagen in the future. The design of the concept looked very familiar to the Polo which has gained a cult status in the global market over the years. The teaser shared by Volkswagen partially revealed the silhouette of the battery-powered SUV.

According to an Autocar India report, it is confirmed that the production version of the ID2 All concept will make its debut at the 2025 Munich motor show, alongside an SUV based on the all-electric hatchback. The report further mentions that both the upcoming entry-level EVs will be displayed as pre-production concepts in September next year.

Volkswagen ID.2-based electric SUV expectations

As per Volkswagen R&D boss, Kai Grunitz, the upcoming electric hatchback and SUV will grab headlines by early 2026 around the time when they are unveiled in their final production-spec avatar. The latest teaser image reveals a few key details about the upcoming electric SUV’s exterior. For instance, the C-pillar gets three vertical lines, something similar to the Maruti Suzuki Ignis.

Up front, the ID.2 electric SUV will flaunt visual similarities with its ICE counterpart featuring a chrome trim and the VW logo at the centre flanked by sleek LED headlamps. The gently sloping roofline gives it a crossover appeal whereas the square-ish flared wheel arches amplifies the SUV stance.  While the SUV is likely to get an all-new nameplate, its electric hatchback sibling is likely to utilise the legendary “Polo” moniker.

The R&D director has indicated “substantial improvements” for the existing ID range of electric vehicles commencing in 2026. These advancements encompass a novel design that pays homage to the brand’s legacy, as well as reductions in battery costs,
