20.58 lakh new workers join ESI scheme in September 2024, marking a 9% growth

The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has reported a significant increase in new enrolments for the month of September 2024, with 20.58 lakh new workers joining the ESI Scheme. This marks a 9% year-on-year growth, highlighting the scheme’s expanding reach and social security coverage for workers across India.

In September 2024, the total number of new employees enrolled under the ESI Scheme reached 20.58 lakh, an increase of 1.70 lakh compared to the previous year, according to a Labour Ministry release.

The data also revealed a notable growth trend from 18.88 lakh registrations in September 2023, underscoring the rising participation in the scheme.

Youth and female participation:

A significant portion of the new enrolments includes younger workers, with 10.05 lakh employees — approximately 48.83% of the total — falling within the age group of 25 years or younger. In addition, female workers showed a strong presence, with 3.91 lakh women joining the ESI Scheme in September 2024, further supporting gender inclusion in India’s workforce.

Inclusivity efforts:

The ESI Scheme has also focused on inclusivity, with 64 transgender employees registering for coverage in September 2024. This reflects ESIC’s commitment to providing social security benefits to all sections of society, ensuring equitable access to its services.

Increase in new establishments:

Moreover, 23,043 new establishments were brought under the ESI Scheme’s umbrella in September 2024, further expanding the scheme’s reach. These new registrations ensure that more workers benefit from social security, reinforcing the role of ESI as a critical social safety net.

Provisional data:

The payroll data shared by ESIC is provisional, as data collection and generation is a continuous process. The figures are subject to revision, but the current data highlights the increasing uptake of the ESI Scheme and its positive impact on the workforce.
