8th Pay Commission Formation: ‘Time apt for announcement…govt will take decision’ – Key takeaways from Staff Side-govt meeting

8th Pay Commission News: Over one crore central government employees and pensioners have been eagerly awaiting the announcement on the formation of the 8th Pay Commission, with any meeting or development between the Centre and employee representatives generating significant interest.

Earlier this month, the Staff Side of the National Council of the Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM) reportedly held a meeting with Finance Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey, where they presented the demands and requests from central government employees for the swift formation of the 8th Pay Commission.

The NC-JCM is the apex body in the JCM scheme which deals with various issues affecting central government employees.

It should be noted that the employee forum has already submitted two memorandums to the Centre, urging the formation of the 8th Pay Commission.

What transpired in the meeting between the Staff Side of the NC-JCM and the government?

Shiv Gopal Mishra, Secretary (Staff Side) of the National Council of Joint Consultative Machinery, recently spoke to NDTV Profit, informing that the Staff Side met with the Finance Secretary in the first week of November to raise the demand for the formation of the 8th Pay Commission.

Mishra, who is also the General Secretary of the All India Railwaymen’s Federation, stated that they had informed the Finance Secretary that India’s GDP was growing at a strong pace, all sectors were expanding, and the overall economic conditions were positive. He added that there was no reason why the 8th Pay Commission should not be formed at this time.

Staff Side’s earlier two memorandums to govt

The NC-JCM had submitted two memorandums, seeking setting up of the 8th Central Pay Commission at the earliest. The first memorandum was presented to Rajiv Gauba, then Union Cabinet Secretary, during the Union Budget presentation in July 2024. The second memorandum was submitted to Gauba’s successor, T.V. Somanathan, who became the Cabinet Secretary on August 30.

Ahead of the Union Budget 2024-25, presented in Parliament on July 23, various media reports speculated that the Centre might announce the formation of the 8th Pay Commission.
