Caving in world’s longest caves to historic trails: Meghalaya Tourism Minister says state has ‘plethora of adventure tourism offerings’ for visitors

Meghalaya’s Tourism Minister Bah Paul Lyngdoh in a recent interview talked about the state’s rich array of adventure tourism options. The picturesque region, known for its natural beauty and unique landscapes, offers visitors “plethora of adventure tourism offerings”, according to Lyngdoh, such as caving in some of the world’s longest caves, and water sports including kayaking, canoeing, and rowing at Umiam Lake and the Dawki River. For those seeking land-based adventures, mountaineering, rock climbing, and accessible nature trails provide unforgettable experiences.

Lyngdoh urged visitors not to miss trekking in Meghalaya, particularly on the historic David Scott Trail. This trail, established by an Englishman from the East India Company era, is a popular route easily accessible from Shillong. The minister noted that these trails are well-maintained, with plans in place to designate them as heritage sites to preserve their legacy.

Speaking at the recent Adventure Tourism Meet, Lyngdoh praised the event’s role in showcasing Meghalaya’s offerings to the broader Indian market and bringing together stakeholders in the adventure tourism sector. This collaborative approach aims to enhance tourism strategies and foster growth.

The Minister announced plans to develop new walking trails in Sohra (Cherrapunji), funded by the Government of India, which are expected to attract significant visitor interest. Lyngdoh emphasized the benefits of adventure tourism, pointing out that adventurers often stay longer and immerse themselves in local culture, promoting sustainable economic growth.

He reiterated that Meghalaya’s Tourism Policy prioritizes high-value, low-volume tourism to ensure that tourism remains sustainable in the state’s ecologically sensitive environment. The focus on quality over quantity aligns with preserving the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Lyngdoh also hinted at upcoming projects that will enhance access to adventure sites and significantly boost tourism.

“These initiatives aim to position Meghalaya as a premier destination for adventure seekers while supporting the local economy and promoting responsible tourism practices,” the Minister said.
