Maharashtra Elections 2024 | ‘Once I make commitment, no turning back’: Eknath Shinde vows to make Mumbai slum-free

Just weeks before Maharashtra Assembly elections, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde pledged to transform Mumbai into a slum-free city and provide affordable housing for the underprivileged.

While addressing a public rally in Kurla on Sunday, Shinde highlighted his government’s achievements and appealed for a renewed mandate, stressing his commitment to inclusive development.

Voting for Maharashtra’s 288-seat assembly is scheduled for November 20, with results expected on November 23. Highlighting his government’s achievements, Shinde stated, “If we can work so much in two-and-half years, imagine how much we will work in five years.”

He called for a renewed mandate, emphasising affordable homes for the poor and questioning why only the elite should lead, hinting at a swipe against Uddhav Thackeray of Shiv Sena (UBT). “We will give the poor affordable homes. Don’t the poor have the right to a house in Mumbai? Can’t the son of a poor farmer be CM? Or only those born with a silver spoon can become CM,” he said, PTI reported.

The Mahayuti government had distributed Rs 350 crore from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and one lakh had benefitted due to this, he said, and asked the gathering to “teach a lesson to those who call your benefits ‘revdis’ (freebies)”. He slammed the opposition for labeling these benefits as “freebies,” calling on supporters to “teach a lesson” to those who look down on welfare programs.

The Chief Minister further defended his administration’s ‘Ladki Bahin Yojana’ aimed at supporting women, saying the opposition had even gone to court in an attempt to block the scheme. “be careful of these evil brothers”, he warned, referring to political rivals.
