Who is Leena Tewari? $3.9bn pharma mogul buys Mumbai’s priciest sea-facing duplexes

Leena Gandhi Tewari, chairperson of pharmaceutical giant USV, has bought two luxurious sea-facing duplex apartments in Mumbai’s upscale Worli area. The deal is worth Rs 639 crore, making it the most expensive residential property sale ever recorded in India.

The two duplexes are located in Naman Xana, a 40-storey premium tower on Worli Sea Face. The apartments span the 32nd to 35th floors and cover a total area of 22,572 sq. ft. The price works out to over Rs 2.83 lakh per sq. ft. on carpet area.

Tewari paid over Rs 63.9 crore in stamp duty and Goods & Services Tax (GST) to register the properties. After including these charges, the total cost of the purchase comes to nearly Rs 703 crore. The deal was registered on Wednesday, as per documents reported by The Economic Times.

Leena Gandhi Tewari is the granddaughter of Vithal Balkrishna Gandhi, the founder of USV Private Limited. Her grandfather established the company in 1961 in collaboration with Revlon. It remains a prominent pharmaceutical and biotechnology company in India.

Tewari is one of the richest women in India. According to Forbes, her real-time net worth stands at $3.9 billion as of May 29, 2025. She is currently the 964th richest person in the world, and in 2023, Forbes India listed her as the 45th richest Indian woman.

USV, a private company, has a revenue of approximately $511 million, according to Forbes. What started as an importer of medicines has grown into one of India’s top five companies in the diabetes and cardiovascular drug segments. It also produces biosimilar drugs, injectables, and active pharmaceutical ingredients.
