Maharashtra Elections 2024: Congress releases second list of 23 candidates, Girish Pandav fielded from Nagpur South

The Congress party released its second list of candidates for the November 20 Assembly polls following a brief meeting of the Central Election Committee (CEC) on Saturday.

The second list of Congress candidates includes several newcomers, featuring three women and only one incumbent MLA, Kailash Gorantyal, who represents the Jalna Assembly seat. Of the 23 seats announced, around 13 are located in Vidarbha, where the Congress aims to make significant inroads.

The contentious Nagpur South seat, which had been a point of dispute between the Congress and its Maha Vikas Aghadi ally Shiv Sena (UBT), has been awarded to the Congress, with Girish Pandav selected as the party’s candidate.

Anuja, the wife of Congress leader Sunil Kedar, will contest the Savner seat in the Nagpur district. Sunil was convicted and had to resign as MLA, with his appeal still pending in the Supreme Court; hence, the party has chosen to field his wife. Former minister Vasant Purke will run for his traditional Ralegaon seat.

The Congress has also announced candidates for three seats in Mumbai: Kalu Badheliya will contest Kandivali East against BJP’s Atul Bhatkhalkar, Yashwant Singh will run from Charkop against BJP’s Yogesh Sagar, and Ganesh Yadav will contest Sion Koliwada against BJP’s Tamil Selvan.

Additionally, Jitendra, son of senior party leader Shivajirao Moghe, will run for the Arni (ST) seat. Suresh Bhoyar will challenge BJP state chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule in Kamthi, while Shekhar Shende will contest from Wardha.

Eariler on Thursday, the grand old party announced its first list of 48 candidates.
