Months after Ratan Tata’s demise in October and his half-brother assumed the chairmanship of Tata Trusts, Noel Tata made his first public statement. While speaking at ET Awards, Noel Tata said that the respect that Ratan Tata commanded within India and on the international stage was in no small measure due to the nature of the person he was – considerate, benevolent and unpretentious.
Noel Tata accepted the special Jewel of India award bestowed posthumously on Ratan Tata by the ET Awards jury for his vision of leading the Tata Group.

As reported by Economic Times, Noel Tata said, “There was no dearth of challenges confronting him and doing what was right for the group. He accomplished that while steering the group to fresh frontiers and unprecedented heights.”
“Left to himself, Ratan may well have chosen a different pathway to the one that saw him nurture and lead the Tata group to new horizons,” stated Noel Tata while adding that Ratan Tata had studied to be an architect and wanted to be one but instead became a leader of business and industry.
“While it was his achievement in business that made Ratan famous, there was a lot more to him. His vision for the Tata Trusts has seen the institution enhance and expand its philanthropic efforts. In his individual capacity as well he was forever willing to lend a helping hand to people and causes. Empathy came naturally to him, and this was evident to the many whose lives he touched,” Noel Tata said.
He went on to add, “There is no greatness where there is no simplicity, goodness and truth, Leo Tolstoy said. Measure Ratan Tata by these characteristics and there can be no doubting what he brought to the world he lived in and what we have lost with his passing.”
